Boxer Vijender Singh ensured another medal for India at the Beijing Olympics when he outpunched Carlos Gongora of Ecuador in the quarterfinal of the 75kg category bout here today (August 20). With this victory, he is now assured of at least a bronze medal. The Bhiwani pugilist, one of India’s best medal hopes, was ahead in all the four rounds and clinched the bout 9-4. The Ecuadorean had no answer to his rival’s flurry of punches and trailed 1-4 in the second round. Vijender made the difference with his left-hand jabs and crucial uppercuts to which Carlos had no answer. With the score reading 7-2 in favour of Vijender after the penultimate round, the Ecuadorean needed to go all out in the fourth and final round. He did manage to close the gap but Vijender’s evading tactics and excellent footwork won him the

It is India’s biggest boxing day at the Olympics so far. Twenty-seven year old Akhil Kumar is on the threshold of history - a win away from securing a medal at the Beijing Games. Akhil Kumar would be taking on the World No. 17 Veaceslav Gojan of Moldova in the quarter finals of the bantam weight 54 Kg category today (August 18). A win in this bout would ensure the Indian a medal in these Games. However, Akhil Kumar, standing on the threshold of history, does not want to step on a banana skin and miss out on his first Olympic medal. For someone who has beaten the world champion in his previous round, today’s quarterfinal bout against the relatively unheralded Veaceslav Gojan of Moldova should ideally be a cakewalk. Akhil, however, refuses to lower his guard and says underestimating opponents can often be fatal. “You never underestimate an opponent, much like you never get overawed by his reputation,” the boxer said. “A number of great players have bitten the dust just because they took it for granted. The Russian world champion, Sergey Vodopyanov made the same mistake and underestimated me. See who reached the quarterfinals. “It’s a cardinal sin in any other sport and I’m not going to step into the ring thinking he would serve it on a platter,” the Haryana boxer said. Even before he boarded the flight to Beijing, Akhil has been insisting that he would not settle for anything less than gold. Asked if that was arrogance, Akhil said he is aware of the fine line that separates confidence from complacency.

Achievements: Made a junior world record score of 597/600 in 2001 Munich World Cup and won bronze; gold in 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games; became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold; Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2001. Abhinav Bindra is the brightest star among a new breed of talented Indian shooters. Born on September 28, 1983, Bindra is quite often criticized for not delivering on the promise he showed as a child prodigy. Coming from an affluent family and with the luxury of an indoor range in his backyard, Bindra proved to an early bird and, at 15, was the youngest participant at the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Bindra shot into limelight by winning a bronze in the 2001 Munich World Cup with a new junior world record score of 597/600. In the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, competing in his pet Air rifle event, Bindra won Gold in the Pairs event and Silver in the individual event. During a purple patch, Bindra won six gold medals at various international meets in the European Circuit in 2001. He was conferred the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award for the year 2001. In the 2004 Athens Olympics, despite breaking the Olympic record Bindra failed to win a medal. But on July 24, 2006, Bindra became the first Indian shooter to win a World Championship gold in Zagreb.
